Nail Strip panels, also known as nail flange or fastener flange, are a roofing type installed primarily on residential applications and rarely used as a roofing material on commercial projects. It's the most economical and easiest standing seam panel to install as a roof or wall panel. Available in 1" or 1.5" tall panel seams.
A nail strip roofing panel is a snap lock standing seam roof that does not have clips. The male flange has one inch slots that are spaced 6 inches apart and fastened directly to the roof deck.
It's the most economical and easiest to install of all the standing seam systems. However, you sacrifice a lot of performance when you eliminate the clips on this metal panel. It's still an expensive panel when compared to an exposed fastener panel for a corrugated metal roof. The cost savings are only about fifty cents per square foot versus a better performing product such as MS2® or Western Lock®
At Western States Metal Roofing, we're often asked a number of questions related to standing seam metal.
Standing seam metal will cost about twice as much as corrugated metal roofing.
The vast majority of standing seam metal roofing jobs are 24 gauge steel. It’s a premium roofing system that’s expected to last 40 plus years. The components must be designed to work as a whole. Standing seam roofing panels are the most expensive panels and use the best paint system. It wouldn’t make sense to use a light gauge steel for minimal savings and lesser performance.
Adding structure to your panel is a great way to minimize oil canning. In this video we discuss clip relief, striations, stiffening ribs, and pencil ribs.
The biggest difference between these two systems is the method of attachment. Standing seam panels are a concealed fastener system which means the fasteners don’t penetrate the face of the panel during installation and they’re not visible. Corrugated panels are an exposed fastener panel, meaning that you need to drill a screw hole through the panel to fasten it to the structure.
Standing seam metal roofing has a flat area in the middle and raised vertical seams at both ends. It's a concealed fastener system, meaning that the fasteners are not visible or exposed to the weather. It's water-tight and long lasting, but it's also an expensive panel system.
Snap Lock is a concealed fastener standing seam metal roofing that has a male and female leg that snaps together. It's available as a clip fastened or nail flange fastened panel.
