Steel Coil - FAQ

How much does 24 gauge coil weigh?

Metal coil in a 24 gauge thickness will weigh approximately 1 pound per square foot. The weight per lineal foot will depend upon the width of the coil.

20" = 1.67 Pounds Per Lin. Ft.

24" = 2 Pounds Per Lin. Ft.

48" = 4 Pounds Per Lin. Ft.

How do I select the right size steel coil?

Metal coils can be selected by:

  • Weight In Pounds
  • Linear Feet
  • Square Feet
  • Color
  • Width

We are open to whichever way you are comfortable working with. If choosing by color, your sales representative can give you a list of available coils in your color coating selection to choose from. Our sales team will also be happy to assist in helping you figure out exactly how many square feet, linear feet, or pounds you will need for your project.

Should I buy a standard size coil?

When you choose to purchase a full coil, it cuts down on the production lead time and the cost of the coil. Coil costs less when it does not need to be processed to different widths and weights.

Processing coils to smaller sizes will cost about 10 cents to 25 cents additional per square foot. The minimum coil processing charge is $250.

We recommend purchasing full coils if you will have a use for this coil in the future or need the material quickly.

Do you recommend coil or flat sheets?

Coil is used typically to roll form into metal panels. Flat sheets are used in various applications including: trims and flashings, landscaping, architectural buildings, and multiple other applications.
