Z Purlins are secondary steel framing members used for roof and wall. Zed Purlins are commonly chosen for the ability to end lap.
This is a purlin that has been painted with a thin red oxide coating. The coating is intended to prevent rust during shipment. It's not a finish coat of paint and the substrate beneath the paint is a bare steel and not a galvanized finish. The red primer prepares the metal for a top coat of paint. Red purlins should be painted prior to installation. If a secondary paint finish is not applied the purlins will rust.
The main advantage of a primed red purlin is that it will save you 25% to 35% versus galvanized purlins.

Designed to reduce the distance the rafters have to span, metal purlins support the loads from the roof deck and help to prevent the roof from sagging. Western States Metal Roofing offers two types of purlins:
C Purlins
Cee or C purlins are shaped like a squared-off letter C. They are often used for structural support in walls and as floor joists in addition to roofs.
Z Purlin
The Zed or Z purlin is shaped like a letter Z. Its shape allows the purlin to overlap with others at the joints. This gives zed purlins the potential to be much stronger than C purlins. Z Purlins are mainly used in walls or for large roofing projects.
It's a great resource for contractors, architects, and homeowners.
