Copper Roofing Dome Installation On Arizona State Capitol Building
If you take a look at some of the most prestigious buildings in history, you’ll notice many of them share one unique quality: they incorporate copper into their architectural designs. From the US Capitol to the Belvedere Palace, many structures around the world have used copper for its durability and striking beauty.
Copper dome on Arizona Capitol Building
Another historic building that can be added to the list is the Arizona State Capitol building which features a dome made from Copper roofing panels proudly supplied by Western States Metal Roofing. Since Arizona is known as the copper state, the dome is especially fitting.
We recently caught up with Mike Butcher, Sheet Metal Superintendent, and Ron Giesler, Project Estimator, of Progressive Roofing, which were the installers of the new copper dome to learn more about the project.
How Was The Dome On The Arizona State Capitol Installed?
Prior to the new installation, the old Copper dome needed to be removed. The state of Arizona wanted a shiny copper appearance, but the old copper roof had begun to patina. It no longer had the appearance of a shiny copper penny. The sealant process on the last dome, which was not installed by Progressive Roofing, did not work and resulted in the dome needing to be replaced prematurely.
After removing the old copper down to the wood substrate, two layers of peel and stick membrane were applied, and then finally the new 20 ounce copper panels were installed.
The Arizona Capitol’s dome features flat spots and odd curves that would have been difficult if working with a different building material. Luckily, copper is soft enough to work with, resulting in a nice, smooth finish that will be admired by Arizona locals and tourists for years to come.
Working With Western States Metal Roofing
Giesler told us that Progressive Roofing had chosen Western States Metal Roofing for their ability to acquire the material needed for the project without any issues, which has become more of an issue for other vendors as the supply of copper has gone down as demand and price for the material continues to rise.
In addition, Western States Metal Roofing allowed Progressive Roofing to pre-purchase the copper and lock in the lower pricing. They also stored the material and curved the battens for Progressive Roofing prior to the installation being completed. Giesler told us that has made WSMR their to-go company for all metals including copper, pre-finished, and rusted roofing products.
